How they teach
He adjusts how he explains things to each student's age, understanding and individual needs. He mixes in Japanese explanations when needed, so that children can gain the confidence to use English. His Japanese is at an everyday conversational level.
For English-language maths word problems, he reads each problem aloud, works out together whether it needs addition or subtraction, draws the situation, and rephrases difficult questions, using Japanese where it helps. The aim is to separate understanding the question from doing the calculation, and to move gradually towards solving problems independently.
