Tutoring for integrated junior and senior high school students

Support for six-year school study,
matched to your school's pace.

We look at your school's textbooks, workbooks, handouts and test range to work out where you are stuck now. After checking that we have a tutor who can cover English, maths or whatever is needed, we propose a one-to-one approach.

  • No enrolment fee
  • Online lessons
  • In person depending on area, time and tutor

Integrated schools do not all
follow "the same curriculum".

Even among chuko ikkan schools, the way lessons run and the materials used differ from school to school. Even in the same year, we cannot decide what support is needed without checking what is being studied now, which materials are used and what the next test will ask.

At Petra, we do not decide from the school name alone. We first check your current materials, your pace and where you are struggling.

Under the Ministry of Education (MEXT) system too, integrated secondary education comes in several forms and allows a distinctive curriculum across all six years. MEXT: overview of integrated secondary education (Japanese)

What we check, in order

  1. School
  2. Materials and pace
  3. Current difficulty
  4. Support needed

You can ask us if you are in a spot like this.

  • It has become hard to keep up with lessons

Instead of repeating only the current unit, we go back to an earlier year or unit if needed, and check where understanding broke down.

  • You do not know where to start before regular tests

Using the test range sheet, workbooks and handouts, we sort out what to prioritise in the time you have.

  • Homework and assignments take over and home study does not work

Beyond what you do not understand in lessons, we sort out when to do what and find a way to keep going without strain.

  • You study, but it does not show in your scores

We check whether you can follow once you see the explanation or can solve it yourself, and go back to the practice that is needed.

From school materials and regular tests,
we sort out where you are now.

We do not say "this is the study method for a chuko ikkan school".

Looking at the materials you use, the current unit, recent tests and assignments and how you study at home, we first work out what to fix.

  1. Check materials and pace

Textbooks, workbooks, handouts, recent papers: whatever you have is fine.

  2. Sort out the difficulties

We look at where in which unit you stop, and whether the cause lies in an earlier year.

  3. Set priorities

Given the time before the next test or submission, we decide what to fix first.

  4. Set out what the tutor needs

From subject, year, materials, language of instruction and format, we set out what the tutor needs.

  5. Check in lessons and adjust

In real lessons we check the approach and the fit with the tutor, and adjust as needed.

What we would check first (example)

Answer the four questions and your example will appear here.

If you do not know the school or material names, whatever you do know is fine.

We support you from the
subject and content you need now.

  • School English

Working from your school's textbook, workbook, handouts and test range, we start with the units you need now.

  • Maths

If the current unit alone is too hard, we check for a tutor who can go back to the prerequisites, and follow your materials.

  • Homework and regular tests

We look at what has to be handed in and the test range, and sort out what to prioritise in the near term.

  • How to study

If "what, when and how far" is unclear, we also sort out how to run home study around school life.

Which tutors can help differs by subject, material and year, so we look for candidates after checking what you ask for.

If you only want help with English, or want to know about our tutors, see these as well.

Who Petra suits

  • Want one-to-one help centred on the school's own materials
  • Want to sort out how to study, not just the weak subject
  • Care about the fit with the tutor
  • Want parents to see what was done in each lesson
  • Want to continue flexibly online or in person where conditions line up

If your top priority is a large bank of past papers for a specific school, or the accumulated know-how of a cram school that has handled only that school for years, it is worth comparing specialist chuko ikkan cram schools too.

Petra suits families who want to look at the materials and study situation they have now, and sort out what is needed one-to-one.

The first four weeks
tend to run like this.

This is one example. How things actually proceed depends on the study situation.

  1. Week 1

Check materials, recent papers and the current unit

Sort out where to start reviewing

  2. Week 2

    Review the priority units

Check whether you can solve them unaided

  3. Week 3

Bring it back to the school's current range

    Connect to homework and workbooks

  4. Week 4

Check understanding and the next test plan

    Adjust the next priorities

What we share after lessons

What was covered and what to check next is shared in a form parents can follow too.

How enquiries work

  1. Send your study situation

Year, subject, what is difficult and the materials you use, as far as you know.

  2. We check content and conditions

From your materials and situation we sort out the support and the tutor conditions needed.

  3. We check which tutors can help

We check whether we have a tutor who fits the subject and times. If we cannot offer one, we will say so.

  4. Trial lesson / next steps proposed

We offer a trial lesson, or propose how to go forward.

Support for integrated schools:
frequently asked questions

Questions we are often asked before people get in touch.

Can you use my school's own materials as they are?

Yes. If you share the textbook, workbook, handouts and test range, we can follow what the school is covering now.

Can I ask about materials such as NEW TREASURE or Taikei Sugaku?

You can ask us. We check the material name, year and current range, then confirm whether we have a tutor who can work with that content before replying.

Can I ask about English and maths together?

You can ask us. We confirm the subjects and content needed, and suggest whether one tutor can cover them or whether it is better to plan subject by subject.

Can you advise on school grades for internal promotion?

If you share the grades, subjects and conditions your school requires, we can first sort out what to prioritise in daily lessons and regular tests. The school's own promotion conditions must always be checked with the school's latest information.

Are in-person lessons possible?

In Tokyo, we offer them where the place, day, time and the tutor's travel conditions line up. Online lessons are also available.

What happens if the tutor is not the right fit?

If the approach or the fit does not work, tell us and we can talk about changing the tutor.

From your current materials
and study situation, we sort it out first.

Tell us the school, year, subjects you struggle with and materials you use, as far as you know. We check, and think about the support and tutor candidates that might suit.
