The focus changes with each grade.
Based on the current grade and target, we decide whether to prioritise vocabulary, reading, writing or interview practice.
Grade 5 to Grade 3
The main focus is vocabulary, basic grammar and short reading passages, while becoming more familiar with English and the test format.
Main focus: vocabulary, grammar, listening
Grade Pre-2 to Grade 2
The main focus is longer reading passages, writing and question strategy, with weaker areas addressed separately.
Main focus: reading, writing, interview
Grade Pre-1 and above
We focus closely on vocabulary range, reading speed and structured writing in line with the demands of higher grades.
Main focus: vocabulary, summarising, writing, interview
Grade 1 preparation is by consultation, depending on tutor availability and specialism.
We prepare each part
of the EIKEN exam.
Alongside practising questions, we identify where marks are being lost and focus the work on what is needed most.
Vocabulary and grammar
We review the vocabulary and grammar required at each grade and practise using them in context.
Longer reading
We practise reading the questions and passage strategically, while managing time more effectively.
Writing
We work on developing reasons, organising the response and using common phrases, giving students more reliable ways to structure their writing.
Interview practice
We practise reading aloud, answering questions and giving reasons in test format, with attention to speaking without long pauses.

Answer four questions and you will see an outline study plan, worked back from the test date. No contact details needed.
This is an outline only. What we actually do is proposed after a free trial, once a tutor has seen where your child is starting from. It is not a guarantee of a pass.

We work back from the test date.
We assess the current level, set out what needs to be covered before the exam and plan the lessons accordingly.
Check the current level
Using past papers and known weaker areas, we identify where marks are being lost.
Set the priorities
From vocabulary, reading, writing and the interview, we pick what to strengthen before the test date.
Practise under test conditions
Using past papers and interview practice, we work on completing tasks within the time limit and responding on the day.
What to look at next
The questions parents most often have after reading how EIKEN preparation works.
Common questions about
EIKEN preparation
The questions we are most often asked before starting, including grades, lesson content and interview practice.
Which EIKEN grades do you cover?
Grade 5 through Grade Pre-1 and above. Grade 1 preparation is by consultation, depending on tutor availability and specialism.
Can you help with the writing paper?
Yes. We work on developing reasons, organising the response and using common phrases to give students clearer ways to structure their writing.
Can we take interview practice on its own?
Yes. We can focus on reading aloud, answering questions and giving reasons, with practice in responding without long pauses.
Let's work out what to prepare
before the exam.
We ask about the current grade, test date and weaker areas, then suggest a plan for working towards the target grade.
Grade 5 to Grade Pre-1 and above. Initial questions are welcome.
