IB TO GPA CONVERTER

IB to GPA Converter (Estimate)

Enter your IB subject grades to get an estimated GPA on a 4.0 scale. There is no universal, official formula for converting IB grades to GPA, and universities or schools may evaluate IB results directly. This is a planning estimate based on Petra's stated assumptions. The table is published below.

Everything you type is calculated in your browser only. Nothing is sent or stored, and no email address or contact details are needed.

How it works and what it assumes

No official worldwide correspondence exists between IB grades (1 to 7) and a US-style 4.0 GPA. Universities and evaluators each use their own method. This tool replaces each subject grade with the grade points in the table below and takes a simple average, with no credit weighting.

The weighted estimate adds 1.0 for HL and 0.5 for SL to each passing subject before averaging. This follows the same idea as the GPA Calculator and is Petra's assumption. In the table a 7 sits near an A (4.0), a 6 near an A- (3.7) and a 5 near a B+ (3.3).

    Reading your result

Use the number as a way to think about how IB grades might look through a US-style lens. If the university you are applying to evaluates IB scores directly, you may not need a GPA at all.

Many US universities evaluate IB results through your school transcript and curriculum context. Do not put this tool's figure on an application.

What this tool cannot tell you

    • This conversion is not official. A university's or evaluator's own assessment always takes priority.
    • Differences in difficulty by level or group, and the EE, TOK and CAS, are not reflected.
    • GPAs a university recalculates itself, or GPAs using only certain subjects, are not reflected.
    • The result does not indicate admission outcomes.

    Frequently asked questions

Questions we are often asked about reading the result.

What GPA is an IB total of 45?

There is no official conversion from a total to GPA. This tool converts each subject grade to a 4.0 scale and averages them; it does not convert the total.

Can I put this conversion on an application?

We do not recommend it. Applications generally either evaluate IB results directly or convert them their own way. Use the value on your school transcript.

Why does HL differ from SL?

The unweighted figure uses the same table for both. In the weighted estimate HL gets a larger bonus because it is considered more demanding. The bonus is Petra's assumption.
