How it works and what it assumes

The IB Diploma total is out of 45: six subjects (1 to 7 each, 42 in all) plus 0 to 3 core points from TOK (Theory of Knowledge) and the Extended Essay. TOK and the EE are each graded A to E, and the pair decides the core points. The matrix below shows the combinations.

Passing the diploma needs more than the total. This tool checks: CAS requirements met, 24 points or more, no grade 1, at most two grade 2s, at most three grades of 3 or below, HL total of at least 12 (top three if you take four HL), SL total of at least 9 (5 with only two SL subjects), and neither TOK nor the EE graded E.

Reading your result

A total from predicted grades is only a guide to what your school may submit for applications. Actual grades come from the exams and may not match your predictions.

University requirements often go beyond the total, for example specific HL grades or subjects. The IB University Requirements Matcher compares your grades with published requirements.

What this tool cannot tell you

  • The conditions follow the IB's published criteria, but the IB makes the final decision and criteria can change by year. Always check the IB's own page too.
  • The combination of subject groups (languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts) is not checked.
  • Special cases such as an EE graded outside A-E, and the detailed CAS requirements, are not covered.
  • A total from predicted grades does not indicate university admission.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we are often asked about reading the result.

How many points do TOK and the Extended Essay add if both are strong?

The pair adds 0 to 3 points. Two As, or an A and a B, earn the maximum 3. The full matrix is in the methodology table.

What happens if I get an E in TOK or the EE?

An E in either is a failing condition for the diploma, however high the total is.

How are points counted with four HL subjects?

All six subjects count toward the total. Only the HL minimum of 12 points uses your top three HL subjects.

Should I enter predicted or actual grades?

Either. A total from predicted grades does not guarantee the real result, and the tool says so on screen.
