How it works and what it assumes
There is no official worldwide correspondence between A-Level grades and a US-style GPA. This tool replaces each grade with the grade points in the table and takes a simple average. A* and A both count as 4.0. E sits between D and U at 0.5, which is a Petra assumption.
The weighted estimate adds 1.0 to each passing subject before averaging, treating A-Level as comparable in difficulty to AP or IB HL. That is also a Petra assumption. AS-Level is not covered.
| A-Level grade | Grade points |
|---|---|
| A* | 4.0 |
| A | 4.0 |
| B | 3.0 |
| C | 2.0 |
| D | 1.0 |
| E | 0.5 |
| U | 0.0 |
Weighted estimate bonus: For each passing subject: +1.0
Reading your result
The number is a rough guide to how A-Level results might look on a US-style scale. UK universities state their conditions as predicted and achieved grades, not GPA.
If you apply to a US or other university, each one has its own treatment of A-Levels. What the university publishes takes priority over this tool.
What this tool cannot tell you
- This conversion is not official. A university's or evaluator's assessment always takes priority.
- AS-Level, GCSE, differences in subject difficulty and differences between boards (Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR and others) are not reflected.
- The result does not indicate admission or scholarship outcomes.

Frequently asked questions
Questions we are often asked about reading the result.
Why are A* and A both 4.0?
Many US-style conversions treat both as the top grade. Some universities distinguish them, so this assumption is not the only valid one.
Can I use a converted A-Level GPA on an application?
Universities normally evaluate A-Levels as they are. If a conversion is needed, follow the method your school or the university specifies. This value is only a guide.
Can I enter AS-Level grades?
No. This tool covers A-Level grades only, not AS-Level.
