What online tutoring means at Petra
Lessons are one to one between a tutor and a learner over an online meeting tool. Materials, marked work and writing can be shared on screen, so questions can be sorted out on the spot.
Online is a way to make lessons easier to keep up, not a goal in itself. We first clarify what the learner wants to work on and what pace suits them, then check together whether online is the right format.
When online tutoring tends to suit
- TravelYou want to cut down on travel or drop-off time so lessons are easier to keep up
- ScheduleClub activities, other lessons or school events mean lessons need to fit around daily life
- Tutor choiceYou would like to consider tutors who suit the goal, not only those within reach of home
- MaterialsYou want to share school materials and marked work on screen as you go
- SettingA calm place at home feels like the most comfortable way to learn
- ContinuityYou want a format that stays workable if circumstances change, such as a move
If none of these fits exactly, that is fine. We will listen to your situation and think together about whether online or in-person is more likely to suit.
How lessons are arranged
Lessons are built around the learner's goal and current situation. The specific content and frequency are settled through the trial lesson and consultation.
- Format
- One-to-one online lessons between a tutor and a learner.
- Tools
- We use an online meeting tool and agree with you beforehand which one. If you have concerns, please tell us before the trial.
- Frequency
- Regular lessons are the norm. Short-term or pre-exam intensives can be discussed depending on the situation.
- Scheduling
- We ask which days and times you prefer. What can actually be offered depends on the tutor's current availability.
- Rescheduling
- If you ask in advance, we will adjust where the tutor's availability allows.
- Sharing
- Materials, PDFs, marked work and writing can be shared on screen during the lesson.
How a lesson runs in detail varies with age, goal and materials.
How tutor matching works
We do not choose a tutor by subject name alone. We look at the goal, the current situation, personality and learning pace, and preferred times, then suggest candidates.
- ConsultationTell us the learner's school year, goal and what they find difficult, as far as you know.
- Checking conditionsWe confirm online or in person, preferred days and times, and any materials you want to use.
- Suggesting tutorsWe consider tutors who could suit the goal and situation, and suggest them to you.
- Free trial lessonThe trial lets you see the approach and the fit before deciding at home whether to continue.
Suggesting tutors is not a promise that a particular tutor is available or will be assigned. The actual tutor and the ongoing schedule are settled after the tutor and your family have confirmed. How long matching takes also varies with the situation.
Getting ready for online lessons
There is not much to prepare. Having the following to hand makes it easier to be specific from the first lesson.
A device and internet connection
A computer or tablet that can join an online meeting, and a stable internet connection.
A quiet place
Somewhere the learner can hear clearly and concentrate makes lessons easier to run.
Materials and marked work
School materials, homework, recent marked work and details of any target exam, as far as you have them.
Goals and preferences
What the learner wants to reach and by when, and preferred days and times. It is fine if these are not settled yet.
If you are unsure about devices or connections, please ask before the trial lesson.
What to expect, and what needs checking
What we can discuss with you
- One-to-one online lessons built around the goal
- Teaching with materials, marked work and writing shared on screen
- Adjusting the approach, or discussing a change of tutor, if the fit is not right
- Whether online or in-person is likely to suit better
Things to understand in advance
- Subjects, content, days and times that can be covered differ from tutor to tutor
- We cannot promise a particular tutor or a specific time slot
- In-person lessons are mainly in Amstelveen and Amsterdam, depending on the tutor's availability and location
- Depending on connection or equipment, online lessons can be difficult to run
- Depending on age and circumstances, we may ask for a family member's support during lessons
The trial lesson lets you check for yourself whether online suits the learner.
Pricing and the free trial lesson

Online tutoring: common questions
Can lessons be taken entirely online?
Yes. Lessons can be taken online from home, anywhere in the Netherlands, which means no travel or drop-off and makes it easier to keep going.
Are in-person lessons possible too?
They can be discussed, mainly in Amstelveen and Amsterdam, depending on the tutor's availability and location. Please tell us what you would like when you get in touch.
What equipment is needed?
A computer or tablet that can join an online meeting, and an internet connection. If you are unsure, please ask before the trial lesson.
Can lessons be held on the days and times I want?
We will note your preferences, but whether they can be met depends on the tutor's current availability. We ask which days and times are easiest to keep up and consider candidates from there.
How is a tutor chosen?
We check the learner's school year, goal, personality and level, then suggest tutors who seem likely to suit. The tutor is confirmed after the tutor and your family have checked.
Can I change tutors if the fit is not right?
If the fit or approach does not suit, tell us and, after hearing the situation, a change of tutor can be discussed. Changing tutor is included in the lesson price.
Do I have to continue after the trial lesson?
No. You can consider it at home after the trial and decide once you have seen the fit and approach.
Is there a registration fee?
No. There is no registration fee, and the first trial lesson is free.
Tell us what you are looking for.
Share the learner's school year, goal and any difficulties, as far as you know them. You do not need to have decided to start. We will listen, then suggest an approach and tutor candidates that fit.
