Why learning needs a person paying attention: the Petra Tutors approach

Petra Tutors is a private tutoring service focused on English, EIKEN and international school support. We help find a learning approach suited to each child.

We begin by understanding where your child is now, then suggest an approach based on their goals and share progress in a way parents can follow.

1.Choosing the tutor and approach together

In English learning, the tutor matters, as do the content and the order in which it is covered. We suggest an approach based on the goal, whether that is EIKEN preparation, beginner English or international school support.

2.Making progress visible to parents

With private tutoring, parents may not always know what happens during lessons. We share how lessons are going and what to work on next, making progress easier to follow from home.

3.Supporting learning as a team

As a child grows, their goals may change. They might start with beginner English and later need EIKEN, school English or international school support. Petra's tutors and wider team can adjust the approach when needed.

4.Making education human again

AI and video resources offer more ways to learn than ever. A person can still notice a child's expression, identify what they have not understood and respond in a way that helps them continue.

At Petra Tutors, academic ability matters alongside confidence, curiosity and the ability to learn independently.

5.What a person paying attention can notice

This is not an argument against AI or learning tools. Tools are good at setting fixed-format questions again and again by the same standard. A tutor or coordinator looks at what sits outside right and wrong, which scores alone rarely reveal:

  • Misunderstanding hidden behind correct answers
  • Hesitation or low confidence before answering
  • Mistakes that repeat in the same form
  • A mismatch between the goal and the materials in use
  • Whether an explanation actually landed
  • Signs that the tutor and student are not a good fit

7.From first conversation to review

This follows what Petra publishes on its tutor matching and lesson reports pages.

  1. Confirm the goal, current level, personality and pace, needed support, and preferred format and times.
  2. Suggest tutors who may fit. At this point the assignment is not confirmed.
  3. Use the free trial lesson to confirm current level and goals and discuss approach and tutor candidates.
  4. Confirm the regular day, time and format with both the tutor and the family, then the assignment is set.
  5. Teach, with the tutor recording what they actually observed in lessons held.
  6. Share a monthly parent report built from those records: strengths, changes and next focus.
  7. Adjust approach, pace and fit. If it does not fit, we first ask about the situation and can discuss changing tutors.

Assignment, availability and results are not guaranteed, and not every regular lesson has a long individual report. Monthly reports rely on tutor records that can be verified.

8.Combining people and technology

Petra uses materials, online resources and technology too, for example the EIKEN practice resources alongside tutoring. They are tools a tutor chooses and adapts after seeing how the student responds, not a replacement for the tutor.

9.Where to start, by goal

For choosing a tutor, see how to choose a tutor who fits and how parents can judge lesson quality; individual tutors are on the tutors page. For EIKEN, start with the EIKEN page; for international school, international school support; and for pricing, the pricing page. To talk first, use the free trial and enquiry page.
