What Is American School in Japan Like? The High School Diploma, AP and Preparing to Enter

In short

Families considering ASIJ sometimes bring us a question like this:

"I understand there is AP, but I cannot tell whether it is a single programme like the IBDP or how many courses students usually take. If we transfer from a school in Japan or overseas, what should we look at?"

When considering American School in Japan, it is easier to see the picture if you look at graduation requirements and AP courses separately, rather than only at the broad category of "American-style school".

This article separates ASIJ's official information from a practical view when thinking about learning support.

What the official information confirms

Campuses

High School Diploma

AP
Offers a wide range of AP courses and the AP Capstone Diploma

ASIJ is an international school with an Early Learning Center in Roppongi and the Chofu Campus.

The High School page explains that the ASIJ Diploma requires 22 credits over four years and 8 semesters. On top of that, the school offers a wide range of AP courses and the AP Capstone Diploma. You can also check the address, grades and key application points on ASIJ's school profile (a Japanese-language page).

Campuses and grade structure

ASIJ is a non-profit co-educational school from Nursery to Grade 12, founded in 1902. The official website says that students from 59 countries are enrolled and that there are more than 170 extracurricular activities at the school.

The school holds accreditation including from WASC and is based on an American-style educational programme. The Chofu Campus is in the west of Tokyo, so if you would be travelling from central Tokyo, the journey time is something to check.

How AP is positioned

AP from the College Board is a set of college-level courses and exams for high-school students.

ASIJ's Admissions FAQ also explains that AP courses can be taken independently of one another, and that there is no unifying component tying them together as in the IBDP.

For that reason, you need to look not only at whether AP exists, but at which courses are taken and when, and how they are balanced with regular courses.

How it differs from the High School Diploma

Four terms that are easy to confuse, kept apart.
TermWhere it fits
High School DiplomaASIJ's graduation credential. Requires 22 credits over four years
Credit requirementsThe credits needed for the Diploma. AP courses are chosen from within this
AP coursesIndividual college-level courses and exams. They can be taken independently of one another
AP Capstone DiplomaAn AP-related diploma offered by ASIJ. Check it separately from the High School Diploma

AP is not itself a graduation credential. At ASIJ, students meet the High School Diploma credit requirements and choose AP courses within them.

When thinking about university, consider not only the number of AP courses but also course rigour, grades, intended field of study and the requirements of the universities themselves.

Admissions for 2026-27

ASIJ's Admissions page states that applications for 2026-27 are open.

It explains that applicants need at least one parent who can speak, read and write English, and that students must live in Tokyo with a parent while enrolled.

Admissions decisions are based on several factors, including how well the family's educational goals align with the school's philosophy, diversity, support resources and the need for English-medium education.

English support and timing of transfer

ASIJ's Admissions FAQ says that language support for multiple language learners is available in Grades 1-8. At the same time, it explains that although a student does not need to be a native English speaker, a high level of English is needed to succeed at the school.

About 15-20% of students are new each year, and the school says it accepts new students in all grades. For that reason a mid-year transfer may sometimes be possible, but availability varies by grade.

ASIJ is a day school, and a condition of enrolment is that the student lives in Tokyo with a parent.

The official FAQ does not state that Grades 9-12, which are the High School, are covered by the language support above. If you are concerned about English, ask the school directly before you apply.

What you need for the application

High School applicants are asked for documents such as the following.

  • Report cards for the past two full years
  • Three teacher recommendations
  • A Student Essay
  • Standardized test results

There is no general entrance examination, but academic, English and other screening may be carried out where needed. If you have no standardized test results, you may be asked to take additional tests.

Fees for 2026-27

ASIJ publishes its 2026-27 Tuition & Fees. In addition to Annual Tuition there are other annual fees, such as the Capital Assessment.

For the first year, check one-time fees and annual fees separately.

On ASIJ's official page, Annual Tuition is divided by grade band: ¥3,143,000 for Nursery to Pre-K, ¥3,498,000 for Kinder to Grade 5, ¥3,699,000 for Grades 6 to 8 and ¥3,826,000 for Grades 9 to 12.

Fees other than the Application Fee fall due in full when you receive the school's invoice. Families paying individually can arrange instalments by speaking to the finance office. Tuition is payable by bank transfer only.

Petra Tutors' practical view

What follows is not official school information. It is our practical view when thinking about learning support.

If a student is struggling in the ASIJ High School, thinking only about AP preparation can make the problem look too narrow.

On top of essays, lab reports, Maths, Science and credit completion in regular High School courses, a student taking AP faces course-specific advanced content and exam preparation.

The tutor expertise needed for AP Calculus is completely different from that needed for AP English.

A checklist before you transfer

Points to consider when judging fit

ASIJ is built around the American-style High School Diploma and a wide choice of courses.

Because students need to choose courses and plan for the long term themselves, how independently your child can manage their schedule and assignments is also something to check.

On a school visit or in your dealings with Admissions, it helps to ask concretely about course placement from your child's current school and about support needs, not only about the name of the curriculum.

In summary

At ASIJ, it is important to understand the High School Diploma credit requirements and AP as separate things. AP is a set of individual courses, not an integrated programme like the IBDP.

Applying involves several conditions, including English, family fit, support needs and application documents.

Fees and admissions requirements can change, so always check the latest official information when you apply.
